David was fifteen when he was first confronted with his sexual feelings head on. He was standing in front of his locker after gym class when Todd Springer, the class jock strutted up to him.

"Hey David, You’re not one of those boys are you?" he taunted.

David quickly pulled up his trousers to cover the evidence.

"I think you might be one of those Mama’s boys!" Todd said as he went off to join his friends from the wrestling team. "Perhaps you should join the wrestling team so we can make a real man out of you."

David spent many hours each day in the library, losing himself in literature in order to avoid facing the cruel world of teenage boys. This made him even more suspect to those who made it their obsession to torment. He really didn’t mind because it gave him separation and relief from his taunters. In the library he was able to fantasize about the world he would live in if he were ever given the chance to truly be himself. He could dream of a world where people were tolerant of diversity, where prejudice did not exist. He realized this was only a dream though. Soon he would have to decide how to survive in the hostile world that awaited him each time he closed the pages of the book together again. David had just prepared to leave the library when he noticed Billy Williams at the other end of the room. Billy was also known as a Mama’s boy among the jocks and was probably tormented even more than himself. David suspected it was true and decided it was time to reveal himself to an ally.

The two boys made an alliance immediately and devised a plan. They were both feeling apprehensive as they prepared to leave the library to test their plan. They causiously walked into the hallway hand in hand. David insisted on carrying Billy’s books for him. They couldn’t have looked more like two young lovers passing through the corridors together. Their fellow classmates stopped in shock and stared as they walked past them. As they turned the corner with anticipation of relief, they found themselves face to face with Todd Springer and three of his friends. David nervously waited for Todd to take the bait.

"Well, well David, I guess I had you all wrong," Todd said as he patted David on the back.

"I guess you did," David replied with a wide grin on his face.

"Consider what I said about joining the team!" Todd told him as he walked away with his teammates arm in arm.

David was pleased with his success and invited his new friend home with him to plan their next strategy. David’s father was working late and his half-father was out of town on a business trip. Of course when Billy called home his half-father was delighted to hear that Billy and David were alone together. This news seemed to dispel the fears he and Billy’s father had shared about their son’s queer behavior.

David and Billy spent the evening comparing notes about their feelings and dreams growing up. They had both had the same fantasy of finding the true identities of their mothers. They were born before the time of genetic gender selection when all babies were allowed to spend the first moments with the birth mother. Now that the system had become more efficient the male children were immediately removed to be placed with the fathers and half fathers. Most often the half-father was relegated the duty of caring for the infant. Female children were of course allowed to stay with their mothers and half-mothers, but the biological mother was of course the one who would tend to the infant while the half-mother worked to sustain the family. Boys were never given breast milk with the hope that it would discourage deviant sexual behavior. It was hoped that this along with the separation at birth would discourage the sinful practice of heterosexuality. Sex for procreation was considered an abomination according to the literal interpretation of the scriptures. Sex was only to be used for purposes of recreation and pleasure. Those who engaged in intimate bodily contact with the opposite sex for sexual gratification of any kind were ostracized as a result of these religious beliefs. In order to protect society from deviant sexual behavior, a decree was made banning all sexual contact between opposite genders. In the future the race would be sustained through artificial insemination only.

David and Billy planned to use their friendship to hide their real identities. Of course they were only friends the way men and women could only be friends. They would use their friendship to help them find a way to exist in a world that thought of them as an abomination. They would call upon the natural love they shared as the same gender to help them survive, instead of wasting it on meaningless sexual gratification.

David told of his embarrassing situation in the locker room with Todd Springer. When all of the other boys stood in the shower together, David stood in the corner flaccid and uninterested sexually. He had tried to get to his locker and dress before anyone noticed he was without an erection again. It was considered abnormal for a boy of fifteen to not get an erection when in the company of other boys nude. He was getting to the age where it was now inexcusable.

Billy told David about the wonderful practice of fantasy. It had gotten him by for two years now unnoticed. He removed David’s pants and encouraged him to participate as he narrated. He then mentioned the unspeakable act, forbidden since the ancient Greek times. He told of his desire to penetrate a woman and deposit his life giving sperm directly into the sacred place where it could grow into his child. Both boys were completely undressed now, masturbating together as Billy narrated the story of his favorite heterosexual fantasy. Just as they reached orgasm, David’s father opened the door to David’s room, then closed it quickly with an embarrassed smirk on his face. David and Billy fell into each other’s arms laughing hysterically. Their little masquerade was working better than either of them could have imagined.

Three years later David and Billy had arranged for a double date with two girls from the girl’s school. They had perfected their ability to create illusion and to recognize other sexual deviants. They remembered the stories about Nancy and Lynn years before. They suspected that their relationship was similar to the relationship between themselves. They decided to test their theory and perhaps have a chance to expand their ability to be true to their natures.

After a movie they went for a drive in the country. David and Billy were together in the front seat while Nancy and Lynn shared the back seat. David stopped the car on a remote road near a farm. Without speaking a word Billy opened his door, climbed out of his seat and stood next to the car leaning on the fender. Lynn opened the door on the opposite side and walked around the car to join him. David quietly slipped into the back seat with Nancy. The four very quietly passed into the realm of discovering their true spirits. They took the love and passion that had been denied to them by an intolerant world.

Their acts were not without consequence though, for Nancy became pregnant. She and David had to deal with the prejudice and bigotry associated with an undocumented child. They were shunned by a world that had relegated creation to a test tube. They were forced to live in a big city ghetto where they found acceptance in numbers. Each year they marched in the huge parade where the streets were filled with mothers and fathers proudly pushing their baby strollers down the streets in broad daylight. They had moved to a progressive state where it was no longer possible to have their children taken from them on moral grounds. They were even given some of the benefits reserved for normal couples by registering with a special partnership registry.

Billy and Lynn never created a child, so they were able to stay in their hometown where they continued to live secret lives in an intolerant environment. They never had the chance to see that something better was possible. They were too involved in the masquerade that allowed them to go along unchallenged. Every Sunday they went to church separately or with same gender friends to continue the deception. They had long before denounced their relationships with David and Nancy. They were angered and frightened by their openness and the way they flaunted their heterosexuality. They could never understand the need to "shove it down people’s throats." They had even discussed the possibility of trying sex aversion therapy to change their disgusting sinful afflictions. Each day they listened to Dr. Laura’s program on the radio and wondered if perhaps she might have the answer to their unspeakable dilemma.
